What do medical studies mean?
Medical Studies covers a very wide range of different subjects requiring different entry qualifications. The potential student will need to be literate, numerate, familiar with computers, able to carry out instructions and able to communicate on all levels. The length of the program varies according to the subject taken, but in almost all cases, further training is available for those who are particularly attracted to a specific area. Medical Assistants support physicians and nurses by carrying out routine procedures and administration or clerical services. They are not to be confused with Physician Assistants who diagnose, examine, and treat patients. Both of these jobs however enable doctors and nurses to spend more time on clinical diagnoses, patient management, and decision-making. The types of employment vary immensely so the prospective student will need to gain career information on a particular job before committing him or herself to a program of education.
Job prospects are very good and it is a rapidly growing area for a number of reasons: the aging population, higher health expectations, and the need for more people with the expertise to deal with increasing bureaucracy and technology. Medical Assistant is the fastest growing career within the healthcare sector. As well as the number of jobs increasing in hospitals, nursing homes, medical supply companies and medical offices: there is more demand from medical insurance companies needing people with the right skill set.
This type of work varies between States depending on the State laws, which govern what level of clinical procedures the individual is allowed to perform. As a result of this, work in States with stricter laws will be more administrative in nature. More specific career information can be gained from medical schools or medical colleges who will be aware of what the State stipulates. A few examples of a Medical Assistant are Podiatrist, Phlebotomist, Medical Record Administrator, Bed Manager, or Ultrasound Technician.
Working hours and salaries vary according to the type of work, location, and level of experience however average earnings are approximately $23,000 per annum.
